UK Coastguard tasked our volunteer crew in response to concerns a number of people were attempting to cross at the river mouth of the Ogmore River. Porthcawl’s D Class lifeboat was launched as a preventative action but was initially stood down whilst heading to the scene due to concerns that there was a large gathering at Ogmore with reports of a brawl taking place.

With further 999 calls regarding the safety of people at the river mouth the D Class was retasked to the incident following confirmation police and other emergency services were present at Ogmore. The D Class assisted 45 people across the river in a preventative safety action. It is believed the people assisted by our volunteer crew were not linked to the mass gathering that took place at Ogmore By Sea car park but had found themselves trapped by the incoming tide.

At the time of publishing this post Welsh Government guidelines currently recommend people stay local with a 5 mile travel rule – please Respect The Water and take care when visiting the coast. If within travelling distance of a beach please visit a lifeguarded beach during patrol hours. At this time the only local beach with RNLI lifeguard patrols is Rest Bay, although our charity is working hard to train more lifeguards in new procedures to reduce infection. If all goes well and there is no further spike in coronavirus or the reintroduction of restrictions, RNLI lifeguards will resume patrols at other local beaches in the coming weeks.
