UK Coastguard tasked Porthcawl RNLI’s volunteer crew to assist a small fishing boat which had got into difficulties close to shore at Sandy Bay (Coney Beach). The charity’s D Class lifeboat, D861 Hugo Missen was launched on service along with further crew who proceeded on foot to provide assistance.

The boat had filled with water in the surf from breaking waves and was at risk of capsize. When the crew arrived on scene they ensured the skipper was safely ashore and then proceeded to bail and pump out the water using our salvage pump.

Once the majority of water was removed the safest method to assist the vessel further was by walking it across the bay in the shallows to the shelter of the breakwater due to the surf conditions. It was then placed at anchor to await the tide in order to gain access into the marina.
