Porthcawl RNLI’s volunteer crew were tasked by UK Coastguard whilst out on training exercise. A climber had got into difficulty whilst climbing the cliff at Ogmore Deeps and contacted the Coastguard by calling 999 for assistance.
Llantwit Major Coastguard team were also tasked whilst both the charity’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat, Rose of the Shires and D Class, Hugo Missen proceeded to locate the climber, assess the situation and see if it was possible to extract the climber at the base of the cliffs.
The crew onboard the Atlantic 85 lifeboat were first on scene and the helm was able to manoeuvre the lifeboat in close enough for the climber to be able to get themselves onto the lifeboat at the base of the cliff.
The casualty’s friend climbed back up to the top of the cliff being monitored and provided with floodlight illumination by the D Class lifeboat crew. Once the casualty’s friend reached the top of the cliff he was met by Llantwit Major Coastguard.
Llantwit Major Coastguard and the casualty’s friend relocated to Dunraven Bay ready to meet the casualty where he was dropped ashore onto the slipway by the D Class lifeboat.
